On July 4^th, 1776, the United States declared its independence from Great Britain.  The Declaration famously states that “All men are created equal” and are endowed with certain unalienable rights, including “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” The declaration asserted that the government derives its power from the consent of the governed.  July 4^th, 1776, is celebrated as the day the people of this nation were no longer Subjects of a King; they were declared to be Citizens of the United States of America.
